Migrations Without the Migraine

Much like a migraine, migrating data from one system to another can be very painful. I’m sure most I.T. folks could easily list at least a dozen reasons why. Rather than give any attention to the pain, I’d like to focus on what can be done to relieve it.

I get migraines regularly. I do data migrations regularly. With a migraine, there are times when I can find the right medicine to help. With a data migration, there are times when I can find the right tools to help. Other times, when the medicine just doesn’t work the way I need it to, I resort to taking time off, closing my eyes, and waiting for the headache to go away. If I tried the same thing with data migrations, I wouldn’t be employed for very long. In our ever-increasing data driven world, migrations aren’t going away and there will never be a perfect tool to handle them all.

In order to simplify the migration process, it is often advisable to consult with a developer. For the past 10 years with Adaptive Solutions, I’ve had hundreds of opportunities to help ease the pain for our clients.  Sometimes it can be as basic as taking a task that requires two clicks and simplifying it into one click. Other times, our team creates complex tools to automate an entire data migration processes that can save hours and hours of tedious work. The best part about a custom tool is that you can accomplish exactly what you want to accomplish without an overwhelming number of bells, whistles, and features that you just don’t care about. From smaller tasks like data analysis and reporting, to larger tasks like data conversion and exports/imports, custom tools can be created to give you the results you need. Whether your migration involves good old-fashioned text files, spreadsheets, databases, email systems, or cloud, a custom tool can be delivered to plug into your process to help things run smoothly.

With the right custom tools in place, your migration can become migraine free.
